How Often Should I Feed My Golden Retriever Puppy?

Bringing home a Golden Retriever puppy is such an exciting time! You may be wondering: how much and how often should I feed my puppy?

Establishing a Feeding Routine

During the first week at home, your Golden Retriever puppy’s appetite may vary. Some puppies are easily distracted by their new environment and are not interested in eating. Other puppies are hungrier than normal! After a week, most puppies have settled into a meal routine. We suggest feeding your puppy three consistent times a day to maintain a steady metabolism. Regular meals also help with house training, since puppies often need to go to the bathroom shortly after eating. By the time your puppy reaches six months of age, you can reduce feedings to twice a day.

Tracking Growth

Before you know it, your Golden Retriever puppy will grow into an adolescent on his way to adulthood. Every month, check the feeding chart on your puppy’s food bag to find a quantity range based on your puppy’s age and weight. It is also important to consider your puppy’s activity level. A highly active puppy will likely need the higher end of the recommended food range, while a calmer puppy may need less.

Monitoring Your Puppy’s Weight

One way we monitor our dogs’ health is by doing a simple rib check. When you place your hands gently on either side of your dog’s chest, you should be able to feel her ribs without pressing hard. If you feel a smooth covering around the chest, your puppy may be overweight. If you can feel every rib clearly, she may be underweight. You should also see a visible waist as she grows. Golden Retrievers are known for having hearty appetites, so it’s easy for them to gain extra weight. Keeping your puppy at a healthy weight during the first year’s growth period is essential for strong bones and joints long-term. If you have any questions about your puppy’s weight, your veterinarian can be a great resource.

A healthy feeding routine is one of the best ways to support your Golden Retriever puppy’s growth and well-being. From portion sizes to feeding frequency, these daily habits make a big impact on your puppy’s long-term health. Pay attention to his appetite, body condition, and activity level, and you’ll be able to adjust his meals as he grows. At Summer’s Goldens, we know firsthand how a consistent feeding schedule and quality nutrition set our puppies up for success. We are here to help guide you every step of the way!
