Choosing the right Golden Retriever breeder is a meaningful decision that directly impacts your puppy’s health, temperament, and well-being. More than simply raising puppies, an ethical breeder works to improve the breed for future generations. At Summer’s Goldens, trust and transparency guide everything we do. We are committed to honesty, integrity, and compassion for both our dogs and our puppies’ families. Below, we highlight a few important factors to consider when selecting a reputable Golden Retriever breeder.
1. Start with Credentials
Look for breeders affiliated with reputable organizations such as the Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA) and the American Kennel Club (AKC). A breeder’s memberships and affiliations reflect their commitment to the breed standard and ethical practices.
The Summer’s Goldens Way:
We are proud to be a member of the GRCA and a recognized AKC breeder. We are also licensed by the USDA, Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH), and Indiana Council of Animal Welfare (ICAW). In addition, we are accredited with an A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau. We have chosen to go above and beyond what most other breeders consider as normal. Our certifications reflect our dedication to ethical breeding practices, the health of all of our dogs, and the trust we build with each of our families.
2. Adult Dogs’ Health Screenings
An ethical breeder follows the appropriate health screenings for their adult dogs, as outlined by the AKC and the Golden Retriever Club of America. Healthy puppies start with healthy parents, and this is an essential step in choosing a reputable breeder.
The Summer’s Goldens Way:
All of our adult Golden Retrievers are thoroughly health-tested following AKC and GRCA guidelines. We evaluate hips using PennHIP and Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), and screen elbows, eyes, and heart through OFA-certified specialists. In addition, we use Embark Genetic Testing and analyze each dog’s Coefficient of Inbreeding (COI) to minimize hereditary risks and support the long-term health of the breed. These measures help us ensure the healthiest litters possible.
3. Read Reviews and Ask Questions
Check online reviews and testimonials to ensure that families have had a good experience. A reputable breeder should also be responsive, informative, and willing to answer your questions before and after adoption.
The Summer’s Goldens Way:
At Summer’s Goldens, we encourage you to read our Google and Facebook reviews and visit our Testimonials page. We’re committed to providing timely, honest communication and lifelong support for your puppy. We feel responsible for our puppies and want them to have loving homes their entire lives. We keep in touch with many of our puppies’ families over the years and enjoy hearing how they’re doing.
4. Know the Puppy’s Health Plan
Ask about the puppy’s vaccinations, vet check-up, and socialization it will receive before going home. This is critical for early development and lifelong well-being of your puppy.
The Summer’s Goldens Way:
Our puppies are vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and receive their first vet check-up before going home. They experience Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) to desensitize them to everyday sights, sounds, and handling. This lays the groundwork for emotionally healthy puppies. They are also AKC-registered and raised in a loving, family-centered environment. We include a personalized care package with every puppy to help them transition as smoothly as possible.
5. Ability to Visit the Breeder
A trustworthy breeder should welcome visits and be proud to show how their dogs are raised.
The Summer’s Goldens Way:
You are welcome to visit our adult dogs and puppies! They would love to meet you, too. To keep the puppies healthy, we ask that you wait to visit until they are at least 6-7 weeks old. By that time, they will have received their first round of vaccinations. Our Summer’s Goldens’ mission is Bringing Joy through Golden Retrievers, and our dogs truly love meeting people and making new friends.
At Summer’s Goldens, we do more than raise puppies. We raise future family members. From the very beginning, we prioritize our dogs’ health, temperament, and well-being. Our goal is not only to help you find the perfect Golden Retriever puppy, but also to support you through every step of the journey.
